Abstract

In France, health organizations will have to face the
retirement of 85% senior nurses and middle managers
for 2015, an issue that is combined with the reforms on
governance that induce a redistribution of the roles.
When middle managers- characterized by an uncomfortable position – are studied among sociologists and
political scientists since the early 1980’s, it is surprising that the Management Sciences give them so little
interest. The purpose of this paper is to offer – on the
basis of the results of the Ministerial mission De
Singly, a case study and a questionnaire (9 hospitals,
N=124) - a classification of "knowing to act" and their
combinations for managers in the workplace. Our
results indicate the significance of the organizational
activity, the counselling about care and in the service
and the managerial coordination when classically references highlight the roles of control over the activity
and the teams and the supply management
