Abstract

The aim of this article, based on the Self-Determination
Theory, is to evaluate the moderating effect of
individual contingent rewards on the relationship
between autonomous motivation and job performance. The results of the study of a sample of
employees at a wine cooperative (N=135), show
that autonomous motivation is positively related to
task, contextual and adaptive performance. This study
also supports the hypothesis that individual performance contingent rewards positively moderate the
relationship between autonomous motivation and
the different facets of performance. We observe that
it is the individual level of autonomous motivation
that determines the boosting or degrading effect of
individual rewards on individual performance.
