Abstract

The objective of this text is to study the know-how related to craft activities as part of the intangible cultural heritage and as a commons. First are presented the concepts of knowledge and skills, common good and common cultural property. This conceptual introduction, drawn from a literature review and fieldwork, will clarify the nature of these elements and their similarities. Therefore, we will wonder: the know-how related to craft activities can be considered as common goods? Then, if these skills can be considered as common goods, what are the consequences in terms of the governance of the intangible cultural heritage? To do this, we will illustrate the case of dry stone in France and the fundamental role of the community in preserving this intangible and tangible heritage. In conclusion, the key issues related to “common good” approach to safeguarding intangible cultural heritage will be recalled
