Abstract

This paper aims to scrutinize the issues that a revised analytical framework of the relationships between business
and society raise. It also intends to pave the way for a new research agenda designed to think over the theoretical
basis. After recalling that, over the last hundred years, the controversies on the role of business are still actual and
how the current CSR movement has shaped the approaches, we state the limits of the different CSR conceptions.
A new research agenda is necessary and could be articulated around three key issues:
– overcoming the legacy of the conceptual obstacles the CSR movement has left, particularly by re-examining the notions of responsibility and stakeholders;
– overhauling the representations of business, of its nature and its role;
