Abstract

This article provides results of a qualitative study of 19 industrial sites in the Bouches-du-Rhône
department which are subject of social concern due to their dangerous activities. It aims to analyze
the determinants of environmental risk management practices of industrial sites. After a thematic
content analysis of the motivations and barriers to adopt environmental practices, we propose a
taxonomy of environmental risk management decision to better highlight the differences between
cases in the surveyed population. Thus, four profiles of industrial sites emerge according to their
positioning in relation to regulatory requirements and their level of risk: the “minimalist leader”, the
“breathless leader”, the “young leader”, and the “mature leader”
