Innovation in digital agriculture, carried out through an open process, aims to improve productivity and environmental sustainability. However, this has various implications that call into question its real benefits. More responsible governance of this innovation could, however, guide it toward a better consideration of societal issues. The research question developed is therefore “How can open innovation processes become responsible?”. The results of an exploratory qualitative study reveal that innovation processes in digital agriculture prioritize technological and commercial dimensions, focusing on competitive advantages and sometimes the needs of agricultural sector stakeholders, which suggests the potential for responsible innovation. However, to fully realize this potential, it is essential to consider all the challenges and risks associated with agricultural digitalization, which are multidimensional and multi-level. Specific measures are proposed to better redirect innovation processes towards a greater focus on sustainability.
