Physician AND manager: A scoping Review!
Keywords:
Physician manager, hybrid role, physician involvement in management, needs and expectations, scoping reviewAbstract
The smooth running of clinical activities in healthcare establishments requires the involvement of doctors in management. However, they are not very inclined to take on a managerial role. It therefore seems essential to better understand the role of physician-manager and to investigate the various factors likely to influence their involvement to provide them with better support in managing clinical activities. This scoping review of the literature included 26 studies selected according to PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines and identified the factors facilitating/inhibiting physician involvement in management, expectations on the part of physicians and their collaborators, physicians’ needs and avenues
for improvement to encourage their involvement in management. The results reveal the factors that determine doctors’ motivation to take on a managerial role, the influence of organizational context and support, and avenues for process improvement. These results are of interest both for career management policies within healthcare organizations and for the academic training of doctors.
