Background: Regional health plan in 2011 in parisian region aimed to reduce infant mortality rate from 3,9 to 3,5 deaths per thousand live births in 2013. The regional health authority initiated a specific project to reduce the highest infant mortality rate in the district of SeineSaint-Denis (5,2 per 1000). We test the capacity of our health information system to monitor this indicator. Method: The data obtained from hospital discharge summaries with live births and infant deaths in 2010 and 2011 are compared with vital statistics from national civil registration system. The hospital stay with infant death is linked to the hospital stay at birth and some risk factors of infant mortality are studied in a multivariate analysis. results: The regional infant mortality rate in 2010-2011 is 3,8 per 1000, with territorial variations from 2,8 to 4,1 per 1000. Perinatal risk factors of 971 among 1230 infant deaths are studied with birth linked stays. After logistic regression, the place of residence is no more a significant risk factor; only prematurity, small for gestational age and congenital anomalies stay significant. discussion-Conclusion: Heath information system is based on routinely available data soon after discharge; the data have to be validated for a better quality. Nevertheless, this information system may be used to monitor perinatal risk factors in neonatal mortality (major component of infant mortality).
