Abstract

Since the 1970s, the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region has
been heavily dependent on cereal imports. Egypt, Algeria and Libya are
among the main wheat-importing nations. This dependence has been accompanied by commercial rivalry between exporting countries to capture the
markets in this zone. The Russian Federation has been a major player on
the Egyptian market since 2013. The current geopolitical tensions not only
confirm this degree of dependence, but are also upsetting the hierarchy of
cereal exporting nations. A major geopolitics of cereals is taking hold in
the global agricultural landscape.
