Mohammad Shahrour calls for a contemporary reading of the Koran in order to solve the
problems the Muslim world is currently facing. According to him, the contemporary knowledge has to be the basis for this re-reading. God created men free and rational and left them
the responsibility to adapt His laws, while maintaining respect for the limits He has declared.
Knowledge is hence one of the prevailing challenges: without knowledge, there is no choice,
and in the absence of choice, there can be no freedom.
