Chapter 5. Evolution and prospects of the practice of contraception in Algeria
Keywords:
contraception, family planning, data collection, AlgeriaAbstract
The evolution of the practice of contraception in Algeria is studied using several population surveys carried out nationally. The analysis of the results of these surveys shows that contraception has progressed significantly over the last 25 years, even if it has not had the expected effect on the reduction of fertility.
It is to be noted also that contraceptive practice in Algeria varies according to several socio-economic and cultural factors, and that the pill remains the most commonly used contraceptive method.
Over the last few years, a drop in fertility has been confirmed by the results of the latest population census (1998). This new behaviour of couples vis-à-vis procreation is certainly also influenced by the current economic difficulties that Algerian households are experiencing.
