Abstract

The amount of damage which a building in reinforced concretecan undertake in case of seismic event with a given intensity canbe estimated using the vulnerability curves. The latest are of amajor importance before any technical decision is taken, such asreinforcement or demolition. For this purpose, vulnerabilitycurves for reinforced concrete structures using vulnerabilityindex were developed. Within this paper, the state of the existingstructures is assessed using “the vulnerability index” method. This method allows the classification of RC constructions takinginto account both, structural and non structural parameters, considered to be ones of the main parameters governing thevulnerability of the structure. Based on this index a DPM(damage probability matrices) were developed, this let us todefine the mean damage grade which lead to semi-empiricalvulnerability curves. These vulnerability curves were adapted toAlgerian context, especially the north of Algeria which is an areaprone to seismicity. The obtained vulnerability curves werecompared to those provided by Risk-UE project.
