A26 MOTORWAY: OVERVIEW OF 25 YEARS OF HERITAGE MANAGEMENT OF 253 WORKS OF ART POTENTIALLY AFFECTED BY INTERNAL INFLATION REACTIONS
Abstract
The aim of this paper is to present the asset managementmethodology followed by SANEF (French highway operator)after discovering the first signs of internal swelling reaction(alkali-aggregate reaction and/or delayed ettringite formation)on highway bridges in the early 90’s. A working group with thehighway national administrator, the French authorities, SANEFand Concrete design office meet several times these last 25 yearsto establish and modify the asset management policy. It wasindeed necessary to adapt the asset management policy to thepathology evolution but also to the scientific knowledge. The different steps followed by the asset management policyare described in this paper. They include initial investigations, simplified monitoring, physico-chemical analysis and detailedmicroscopic observations. Aging tests, waterproofing coatingsevaluations and loading tests of both decks of the bridge werealso realized. Finally a specific monitoring was developed andit is now possible, after 25 years, to decide on the state ofconservation of each bridge under SANEF concessioncontract.
