Abstract

Despite compliance with recommendations made by seismiccodes many structures suffer major damage during a majorearthquake. The behavior of a structure during a severeearthquake is not necessarily the one intended by the designer. The interaction between parameters such as the height of theground floor, stiffness regularity, overload, variation of spanlengths, etc. affects the overall behavior of the structure and thenthe effective force reduction factor. The purpose of this study is todetermine the effect of these parameters on the variation of SteelMoment Frames force reduction factor. The results show thatthese parameters and especially their combination affectsignificantly the value of the force reduction factor and indicatethat current code provisions for ductile steel structures need to bemodified.
