Abstract

Deeply penetrating hydrophobic impregnations can help toincrease the design life of a civil engineering structure, byproviding an effective chloride barrier. Although its efficiency issomewhat reduced if cracking occurs after the treatment, aconsiderable reduction in chloride penetration is still achieved. They are also efficient for ASR litigation. Results from fieldexperiments show the positive return on investment when usingthese types of deeply penetrating hydrophobic impregnation. However, lower active content formulations have a tendency forthe active ingredient to remain at the surface and quickly loseefficiency when subjected to weathering. Therefore the right typeof product must be selected for each project (e.g. for civilengineering structures subjected freeze and thaw cycles, productsatisfaying the class II penetration depth of EN 1504-2 shall beselected).
