Abstract

horizontal directional drilling (hDD) is an innovative pipeinstallation method efficient and unobtrusive. however itsdevelopment suffers in France from insufficient knowledge aboutits impact on surrounding soil stability. This study suggests amethod to obtain physical and mechanical soil parameters wheninjected with drilling fluid as around pipe during its pullback. The purpose is to understand how bentonite drilling mudinteracts with sandy ground and to link this mechanism topossible movement. Laboratory filtration reported in this workshowed that fluid quickly seep into sand on few centimeters. Moreover, it creates an interface that obtains in few hoursmechanical properties better than surrounding sand ones.
