The state of health of the inhabitants of “intermediate” countries such as Chile tends to be closely linked to their socio-economic status. However, many other social, cultural, geographical and organisational factors can also affect the degree of equity of health provision and outcomes in these countries. Given the right information and a judicious choice of health and socio-economic policies, decision makers at all levels can do a great deal to raise health standards and reduce inequalities in a way that is cost-effective for the economy as a whole.
