Abstract

The study of medicine, pharmacy and dental surgery are at the heart of the preoccupations of universities where they are declared to be “protected courses”. Admission requirements are “draconian” according to the parents of students, and this leads to constant pressure on decision-makers to allow access for everyone. The experiment which is under way at the moment, introducing the famous TC SNV (core curriculum for Life and Natural Sciences) over the university year 1998-1999 does not seem to be bearing fruit; training centres have been reduced from 7 to 3 in the Oran region and admission requirements for the year 1999-2000 are more difficult because of the overall average required for enrolment in the TCSNV. Medical science seems to be the most attractive among the courses proposed on a national level. Yet, on a popular level there is not always satisfaction with the services given by healthcare professionals. The Ministry of Health in recent years has taken a certain number of measures to improve the training of healthcare professionals.
