Chapter 2. Public healthcare: what stakes?
Keywords:
public health, health care, health policy, health care costs, AlgeriaAbstract
The various healthcare indicators in Algeria are experiencing stagnation which began in the early 1990s with economic recession. The public healthcare that was the spearhead of the post-independence national health system has little by little taken a back seat and given way to other priorities in curative care that have become increasingly pressing and costly.
Given these new perspectives reinforced by a progressive reorganisation and a competitive liberalisation of the healthcare system and taking into account the profound socio-cultural changes in the population, we seek to examine what is at stake in public healthcare in Algeria.
