Craftsmanship long seemed doomed to disappear in the face of the industrialisation of the economy. However, while certain activities did experience difficulties, sometimes profound ones, it must be noted that craftsmanship has endured, that it did not disappear in the 20th century, and that it has not become a mere vestige of a pre-industrial economy, or even a tourist attraction. Since the beginning of the 21st century, it has even been growing – slowly at first, then more rapidly over the last fifteen years or so – including in trades that were highly concentrated in the 20th century and are now experiencing a renaissance.
