Abstract

The regulation of oil exploration in Brazil has always been the subject of political controversies. It is largely the result of clashes around the role of the state and, in particular, of the state-owned company Petrobras in the economy. The discovery of significant oil reserves in 2007 revived this debate and fueled a political conflict that resulted in the dismissal of the President of the Republic ten years later.
