Abstract

What do patents tell us about the history of inventions? It’s through the law that this article addresses the question, by studying the decisions of justice in the United States between the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 21st century. In deciding how the known and the unknown could relate to different periods, American judges wrote a history of inventions distinct from a simple history of technical progress.
