Abstract

This paper offers a frame for the study of terrorism, as a specific kind of violence, based on its manifestations in Latin America. The first part
discusses definitional and methodological questions, before a presentation of the bibliography containing the main results of curent research. The
third part deals with the spatio-temporal incidence of terrorism in the context of the different geopolitical situations in the region, since 1970
to the present. Finally, the examination of several aspects of the terrorist complex (including counterterrorism) shows that Latin America is a kind of
laboratory for the development of terrorism studies, and the advancement of empirical and theoretical work on the topic.
