Abstract

Evo Morales was re-elected for the third consecutive time as President of the Plurinational State of Bolivia with the official tally of 61.5 percent of the vote. The candidates put forward by his party, Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS), won two-thirds of the seats in the Asamblea Legislativa Plurinacional (ALP), both in the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate. This flattering result is explained partly by the candidate’s charisma and the country’s good economic health¾primarily caused by favorable commodity prices for exports¾, but the magnitude of the success is due to widespread fraud orchestrated by the executive with the complicity of the Tribunal Supremo Electoral.
