The author describes the results of a programme of research on jazz that he directed from
1978 to 1986 at IRCAM. At the beginning, the research was carried out on a
characterization of swing but did not completely reach its objective; then work began on
the bases of an “improvising machine”. The data-processing experimentation for this was
productive, although the corresponding software has not been used since.
