Abstract

Among the works of Miles Davies, the period from 1958 to 1965 gives a picture of the
evolution in his approach of a music oriented towards modality. One discovers that after
a simple use of modes at the beginning, the constant search for added tensions guides the
trumpeter to include elements farther and farther from the basic modes: triads, altered
scales, up to the borders of an “integral chromatism”. Modes are used only in their
relation with basic harmonic principles
