Abstract

While the string quartets of Debussy and Ravel have often been likened, they nevertheless illustrate two very different approaches to “cyclical form”. Based on the
writings of the time, this study shows how Debussy thoroughly exploits the possibilities of the “cyclical form” by exploring, on the basis of a single thematic idea, new
and unexpected compositional parameters, while Ravel, by contrast, seeks to hide his
cyclical processes by submerging them in an array of rich and contrasting themes.
More broadly, this study questions the compositional issues that result from the
use of cyclical processes and the ensuing implications. It highlights the diversity of
solutions and choices, which can be considered as a demonstrative act and a way for
composers to position themselves in the musical context of the time.
