The law of 2 February 2016 establishing new rights
in favor of the sick persons and the end-of-life people
is part of a certain continuity of the previous laws. It
stemmed from a reflection of almost four years, made
up of public and parliamentary debates.
It reinforces previous rights. Two novelties appear in
this law: advance directives that become binding and
a right to deep and continuous sedation until death in
certain situations.
The effective implementation of this new law will largely depend on the effective implementation of the
measures of the Palliative Care Plan. Its good use will
also largely depend on the professional recommendations that will be made. Several issues remain outstanding and will require further research.
