Abstract

Maternal mortality is a major public health problem. It
is considered as a real scourge affecting mainly developing
countries. The causes are not always well identified and
sometimes even totally unknown. Our study is a retrospective
descriptive and analytical study. It included all the cases of
maternal death in the region of Sousse during a period of 7
years. In our study, the distribution of maternal deaths does
not differ significantly by socioeconomic and demographic
characteristics with the exception of marital status and
parity. The cause of death and parity and gestational status
showed a statistically significant association. Furthermore,
the route of delivery had a statistically significant association
with the cause of death.
