The first part of this article briefly shows the results from
three major criminological surveys from the 40s, the 50s
and the 70s which tackle the subject of re-offending but
leave quite aside the question of desistance. The second
part outlines the findings from more recent studies on
re-offending and desistance both, showing that if French
and Anglo-saxon often differ on their approach and,
even, the way they each present these approaches, they
converge in their understanding of this phenomenon
(re-offending and desistance) and its major aspects and
the priorities of public action.
