Abstract

Despite the rhetoric of the “globalization process”, the concepts of “border” and “territory” gained a new relevance in recent years. The European Union (EU) is no exception to this trend. The control of its external borders has become an essential dimension of its security policy. However, lacking specific operational means, the Union has embarked on the path of the socalled “smart borders”, drawing on the United States’ experience. Relying on a wide range of “new technologies”, the EU aims to ensure, at the same time, the monitoring of individual movements and the surveillance of vast geographical areas on the European external border.
