While there is no doubt that high risk patients (with more than a 20% risk of a
cardiovascular event in the next ten years) need more aggressive preventive treatments, the majority of cardiovascular events occur in people at intermediate risk (10-20% risk
at ten years).
Accurate risk assessment may be useful in reducing cardiovascular events by reducing
better strategy of preventive measures.
It has been suggested that traditional risk assessment can be refined with the selective quantification of
coronary calcium or calcium scoring (CS) as well as other methods of measuring atherosclerosis
