Abstract

Atrial fibrillation (AF), the incidence of which is
constant increase, is an independent risk factor for venous thromboembolic disease and in particular
ischemic stroke (1 stroke in
6 is linked to AF). About 25% of people over 65
are affected, thus being able to suffer from morbidity and mortality to be taken into consideration.
Current recommendations (updated in
2006) concerning primary and secondary prevention
thromboembolic events are established based on the number of risk factors for thrombosis
associated with AF (1).
