Abstract

Objective: The main objective of this trial was to compare the effect of two types of elastic compression stockings, progressive and degressive, on different parameters
measured by echo-Doppler.Method: single-centre, open, randomized, crossover
controlled trial comparing progressive compression kneestockings (Progressive ® N’System) and degressive compression knee-stockings (Class III Veinostim®).
Echodoppler examination was performed 4 times: T1
before donning the first stocking, T2 after having worn g
the first stocking, T3, before donning the second stocking,
T4 after having worn it. Between the two examination
periods, the subject was asked to walk. Statistical comparison was conducted according specific cross over
methods taking into account, compressive or degressive
compression and the period effect.
Results: Twenty patients were included. Mean age was
52.9 +/- 16.8 years and 85% were women. They were
CEAP 2 (55%) or CEAP 3 (45 %). No significant change of
the diameter of the deep and superficial veins were
observed between compressive and degressive neither for
the amplitude and duration of the venous reflux. Donning
progessive stockings was significantly easier than the others (p = 0, 0005).
Conclusion: progressive and degressive compression
stockings do not show any significant influence on venous
diameter and venous reflux. Donning is easier wth compressive stockings with may contribute to patients’ compliance.
