While the Indonesian armed forces traditionally focused moreover on the interior sphere, the
regional environment and the President Joko Widodo priorities in the defense sector, have favored
an increasing interest of the army for transnational challenges. This article explores the role of
China in this move and in the evolution of the military posture, in a context marked by both the

also by the major economic weight acquired by China in Indonesia.
