INSTRUCTIONS TO AUTHORS
Submission of articles to Photo Interpretation – European Journal of Applied Remote Sensing
1. General: Photo Interpretation – European Journal of Applied Remote Sensing is an international peer-reviewed journal publishing original and review papers in English or French, covering all aspects of remote sensing and its applications, largely using satellite or aerial imagery. Articles published usually correspond to one of the following themes: the acquisition, analysis, and interpretation of data from airborne and space platforms; the use of remote sensing in multidisciplinary research programmes; the cartography using remote sensing data and Geographical Information Systems. Papers should present the results of theoretical or applied research on specific topic areas such as agriculture, archaeology, climatology, forestry, geology, geomorphology, glaciology, global environmental monitoring, human geography, hydrology, land cover, oceanography, planetology or urban studies.
Submission of an article implies that the work has not been published previously, except as part of a published lecture, an academic thesis or in the form of an abstract in a conference, that it is not under consideration for publication elsewhere, that its publication is approved by all authors and that, if accepted, it will not be published elsewhere in the same form, in English or in any other language, without the written consent of the Publisher.
2. Type of contributions: The main body of the journal consists of original scientific full length articles corresponding to the topics listed above and comprehensive state-of-the-art articles. These papers can result of a scientific conference or workshop. Brief papers reporting preliminary results or research in progress may be published as ‘Short Communications’. The journal has a large allowance for colour illustrations that are published without charge. Colour illustrations are printed separately from articles in a final-bound leaflet.
3. Refereeing: All articles submitted to Photo Interpretation – European Journal of Applied Remote Sensing are submitted to referees who may decide to accept or reject them or suggest modifications to be made. The names of the referees are kept confidential. The Editor in Chief acts as arbitrator in the event of disagreement.
4. Languages: Manuscripts may be written in any of the official languages of Photo Interpretation – European Journal of Applied Remote Sensing – English or French. The article must be preceded by a short abstract in the original language (less than 150 words) and by an extended abstract in the other language (maximum 1000 words) in which the main figures and tables must be cited. Authors are requested to write their own extended abstract in the complementary language. However, if they are unable to achieve this task, they may write the extended summary in the original language of the article and the Editorial Board will translate it after final acceptance of the paper.
5. Manuscript format: The length of a published manuscript is usually 10 printed pages (1 page represents 5,200 characters) + 2 to 4 colour plates. Manuscripts should be typed double spaced with ample margins (2.5 cm). They should be submitted preferably as a Word or Open Office file. Original text and figures will be sent after the final acceptance. The first page should be the title page containing the original title of the article, translation (if possible) of the title into the complementary language, full names (first name and surname) of the author(s), author(s)’ affiliation, the complete address of the corresponding author (including a valid e-mail address), and a list of up to six keywords with their translation in the complementary language.
The title page should be followed by the abstract in the original language and the extended summary in the complementary language. The main text of the article should be structured in numbered sections and subsections using up to three levels of digits e.g.: 1. FIRST LEVEL, 1.1. Second Level, 1.1.1. The third level (the abstract is not included in section numbering). Use this numbering also for internal cross-referencing. Any subsection may be given a brief heading. Each heading should appear on its own separate line. The main text should be followed by acknowledgments and appendices (if required), references, a list of tables and figures, followed by the tables and figures themselves (one to a page) with the caption in the original language and, where possible, the translation. Tables and figures should be numbered in Arabic numerals in a single sequence starting from 1 and should be referred to in the text by their number, e.g., (Table 1), (Figure 3).
6. Units and symbols: The International System of Units (SI) shall be used, meter (m), kilogram (kg), second (s), ampere (A), kelvin (K), candela (cd), mole (mol). The authors are requested to convert any data expressed in other units.
7. Illustrations: Particular attention must be paid to the size of the lettering, which must be legible after 50% reduction. Images and photographs should be of high quality. The digital format should be at least 300 dpi for images and 600 dpi for drawings. Do not embed figures or tables, but prepare these using the wordprocessor's facility. All illustrations should be also put separately at the end of the manuscript.
8. References: References should be cited in the text by the name(s) of authors, e.g., JUBERTIE (2007), CHOROWICZ and DEROIN (2003), FROIDEFOND et al. (1988). The reference list should be given alphabetically and by date, as in the following examples:
