The histories of Tibet and Xinjiang are intertwined as well as different. The two regions have in common that they were annexed to China in 1950, one year after the Chinese Communist Party took power in Beijing under the leadership of Mao Zedong. Since then, these two regions have been subjected to ruthless repression based on very close surveillance of the population, physical and psychological abuse, significant immigration of “Han” (ethnic Chinese) and a policy of assimilation in terms of culture, religion and language.
